What is that soaring over the horizon? Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s the delightful ghast, an interesting addition to the universe. While chickens may be birds in a way, they don’t actually fly unless thrown off a cliff. Parrots can glide but not much further. Then we have phantoms that, unlike the aforementioned, definitively fly. Additionally, there are also allays, bees, bats, and even the Ender dragon. A surprising number of things do take to the skies in this realm. However, let’s focus back on what is now directly overhead: the happy ghast, a cheerful creature that is eager to meet you!

Happy ghasts differ significantly from their more ominous relatives. Unveiled during Minecraft Live 2025 and introduced in the Chase the Skies update in June 2025, these ghasts exhibit excitement and can accommodate up to four players simultaneously, plus they can pull cargo as well.

To brighten the mood of a ghast, first, you must venture into the Nether and locate a dried ghast, which may either be the mummified remains of a former ghast or an enigmatic egg. The Mojang research team continues to investigate this mystery. However, it has been discovered that a dried ghast can be fashioned by combining eight ghast tears with a block of soul sand at a crafting table. After learning this, we pondered whether to promote the scientist responsible for such an insightful finding.

Once you have your dried ghast, return to the Overworld and place it in shallow water. You’ll notice green particles emerging as the hydration process kicks off. As time passes, the little creature will glow and appear increasingly joyful. In around 20 minutes, it will be lively enough to begin flying, transforming into a ghastling (not to be confused with baby ghasts which belong to a different phase of their lifecycle). Nurture your ghastling and feed it snowballs to speed up its growth until it becomes an adult happy ghast.

When fully grown, a happy ghast will drift around its birthplace. If you hold a harness or a snowball and approach it, it will descend to your level. At this point, you can equip it with a harness, allowing up to four players to ride along. The first person who hops on takes control of steering while others can simply enjoy the ride. The happy ghast has the capability to fly both up and forward; just direct it where you’d like to go.

This creature can also transport additional items via leads. You can easily attach boats, boats with chests, horses, camels, sniffers, and more by crouching and using a leash on the ghast. To detach the load, scissors are required. Unfortunately, you cannot ride in a boat that a ghast carries due to safety concerns, but riding a pig or an unsaddled horse while atop a ghast is certainly amusing.

To dismount, hit the designated button, and you’ll find yourself on the ghast. It will remain stationary for as long as you’re atop it, facilitating construction of tall structures. Just keep in mind that jumping off could cause it to drift away, so be sure to secure it with a tether.

Now the adventure awaits! Where will you and your joyful companion explore next? A majestic mountain? A deep ravine? Or perhaps gliding through clouds under a moonless night sky with your closest friends? The possibilities are yours to choose!
